A homeowner in Cochrane called TechVill about water leaking from their Samsung refrigerator. Technician Randy found the source behind the rear panel — and the whole repair came down to clearing a passage that had blocked.
The unit. A Samsung RB194ACRS bottom-freezer refrigerator, built in January 2012 — fourteen years in service and, apart from this fault, running normally.
Behind the panel. With the rear cover off, the mechanism was visible. The fresh food compartment was dripping water directly off the evaporator, and the drain tube below the coil was plugged.
This is the normal operation of a frost-free refrigerator with one step removed. Every defrost cycle melts the frost off these fins on purpose; the meltwater is supposed to run down into the trough at the base of the coil and out through the drain tube to a pan near the compressor, where ambient heat carries it off. Block the tube and the water has nowhere to go. It backs up out of the trough and finds its way into the compartment instead — which the homeowner sees as a refrigerator that leaks.
Nothing on this machine had failed. The defrost cycle was working correctly; it was the disposal path for the water it produces that had closed.
The repair. Randy cleared all the obstructions from the drain pathway and tested the unit afterward to confirm the water was moving through the drain rather than merely appearing to.
The outcome. No parts were installed, because no component needed replacing. The visit ran 48 minutes and was billed at $266.70 including GST. As a clearing repair rather than a parts replacement, no parts warranty applies — there is no new component on the machine to warranty.
Water appearing inside a refrigerator is worth acting on early. Left alone, a blocked drain does not stay a puddle: the backed-up water refreezes on the next cooling cycle, and what starts as a clearing job turns into an iced-over evaporator and a compartment that stops cooling altogether.
