The Ticket Said Fan Switch. Five Burner Assemblies Were Missing

The short version

What the customer reported

The booking note was short: the fan switch on a JennAir island downdraft cooktop seemed to be acting up. The homeowner added one practical detail — the unit is an island built-in, so if anything needed lifting out of the countertop, they were happy to help.

That is a reasonable read of the symptom. On a downdraft cooktop the blower is the part people notice, because it is the part that makes noise. When it stops behaving, the switch is the obvious suspect.

What the technician found

TechVill technician Oleksandr arrived and started where any gas cooktop diagnostic starts — with the burners themselves, before touching the ventilation side.

All five cup burner assemblies were physically absent from the unit. Not cracked, not corroded, not clogged: gone. The burner wells were open, exposing the orifices and spark electrodes with nothing seated on top of them.

That finding changed the scope of the visit. With no burner heads in place, there is nothing for the spark electrodes to ignite against, which means the ignition system could not be tested at all — the diagnostic itself was limited by hardware that was not there. Any conclusion about the spark circuit would have been a guess.

The ventilation complaint turned out to be real, and separate. The downdraft blower’s regulator switch had failed outright — not a marginal or intermittent fault, but a dead component.

Why the difference matters

A cooktop missing its entire burner set is not a failure pattern. It is a history. Somebody removed those assemblies — for cleaning, for a partial repair, during a move — and they were never put back. The homeowner booked the call for the symptom they could see; what they actually needed was an inventory of everything the unit was missing plus everything that had genuinely broken.

Had the visit been scoped narrowly to “check the fan switch”, the customer would have received a correct answer to the wrong question: one part number, and a cooktop still unable to make flame.

The parts list

Oleksandr identified every component required to bring the cooktop back to a complete, operable unit — all genuine Whirlpool Corporation service parts for the JennAir JGD3536GS00:

  • Burner assembly, SR — left front (part #W10815355) — the semi-rapid burner head that seats over the orifice and shapes the flame pattern
  • Burner assembly, AUX — left rear (part #W10815354) — the auxiliary low-output burner for simmer work
  • Burner assembly, UR — centre front and right rear (part #W10815357, ×2) — the ultra-rapid high-BTU positions
  • Burner assembly, R — centre rear (part #W10815356) — the rapid burner head
  • Burner cap kit (part #W10910375) — the complete matched cap set; caps are machined per burner position and are not interchangeable between them
  • Blower switch (part #W11676792) — the downdraft regulator control that had failed

That is effectively a full burner-system rebuild plus the ventilation control, which is a fair reflection of how much hardware was absent or dead.

What the customer decided

The homeowner chose to source the parts and install them independently. TechVill did not perform the installation, so no labour warranty applies to this job.

They still received the complete diagnostic: which positions were empty, which specific burner head belongs in each one, the matched cap kit, and the confirmed blower switch failure. The parts list is position-specific for a reason — five burners across four different part numbers, with a cap kit that has to match. Ordering the wrong head for a position produces a burner that mounts but never tunes correctly.

For reference, the quote had the work at $840 in parts, a $30 parts handling fee and $325 labour — $1,195 plus GST, or $1,254.75 — had TechVill carried out the installation. The visit itself ran 20 minutes.

Diagnostic work stands on its own

Sometimes the useful deliverable is not a repair. It is knowing exactly which six parts you need, in which positions, before you spend money. Whether TechVill installs those parts or the homeowner does, the diagnostic is worth doing properly the first time — and that includes opening the burner side of a call booked as a ventilation problem.
