Ice Jammed the Isolation Door: A Fisher & Paykel Built-In in East Vancouver

The short version

A homeowner in the Hastings-Sunrise area of East Vancouver called TechVill because the fridge compartment of their Fisher & Paykel built-in had stopped cooling. Technician Alexander found ice — a lot of it, in places it had no business being — and a chain of failures that all traced back to one component.

The installation. This is a panel-ready built-in, faced with cabinetry panels cut to match the kitchen. From outside it is a run of millwork. That is worth noting before any repair conversation, because a unit specified into a kitchen this way cannot be swapped out for a floor-model replacement without the cabinetry work that follows it.

The fresh food side. The compartment that would not cool. There is nothing obviously dramatic here from the front, which is the point — the failure was behind the panels, and the customer’s only visible symptom was that the food was not cold.

The airflow path. Alexander found significant ice buildup through this section. Two things had happened as a result: the isolation door — which regulates cold air transfer into the fresh food compartment — was frozen shut and could no longer open, and both fans were completely clogged with ice.

That explains the symptom in full. The sealed system on this fridge was capable of making cold; it simply had no way to deliver it. A stuck isolation door and iced-up fans mean no air movement into the compartment, and a refrigerator that cannot move air cannot cool, however healthy its compressor.

The rating plate, and the cause. The plate identifies the unit as an RS36A80J1N with a 240 W defrost heater. That heater is the reason a frost-free refrigerator does not fill with ice in the first place: on every defrost cycle it clears the coil, and the meltwater drains away. When it stops doing its job, frost accumulates cycle after cycle until it starts jamming the mechanical parts around it — which is exactly the progression found here.

The repair scope

Components to be replaced:

  • Fan and isolator assembly (part #843566) — the isolation door and fan unit that regulates and drives cold air into the fresh food compartment; replaced as an assembly because the ice seized the door
  • Freezer fan (part #848318P) — the freezer-side circulation fan found packed with ice
  • Defrost heater, double, 120 V (part #847025) — the element that clears frost from the evaporator each defrost cycle, and the most likely origin of the entire buildup

Replacing the jammed isolator and the iced fans without the defrost heater would restore airflow and then let the same ice rebuild around the new parts. Fixing the consequence and leaving the cause is not a repair; it is a delay.

Parts are on a five to seven day lead time. Because the work reaches deep into both compartments, the homeowner has been asked to empty the fridge and freezer completely before the install visit — that keeps the install efficient and avoids food sitting in a warm cabinet while the unit is open.

The diagnostic visit was billed at $790.65, covering parts, handling and the premium service call. Labour of $650 plus GST — $682.50 — falls due at the install visit.
