What the ticket set up

A Frigidaire CGCS378DS1 range in Edgemont Village wasn’t heating in the oven. An earlier visit had pinned it on the bake element and pre-ordered the part, so the plan on paper was simple: return, install the element, done. TechVill technicians Alex and Sydney arrived with that element in hand — and then ran a fresh diagnostic before fitting it.

What the diagnostic actually showed

The bake element was fine. The real fault was upstream, in how the range delivers power. An electric oven element runs on 240 volts — two live legs. The relay board that switches those legs was dropping one of them (L2), so the elements were only seeing 120 volts. Half the voltage means far too little heat, which reads exactly like a “dead” oven — but the element isn’t the failure, the board feeding it is.

Installing the pre-ordered element would have changed nothing. A brand-new element fed 120 volts behaves just like the old one: it can’t heat properly. The customer would have paid for a part and an install and still had a range that wouldn’t bake.

Where it landed

So the element stayed in the box. The actual fault — the relay/control board (part #318185481) — turned out to be discontinued, with no vendor supply. With the one part that would fix it unavailable, the honest call was that the range isn’t economically repairable, and the customer was advised toward replacement rather than sold parts that couldn’t restore it. The visit was billed as the diagnostic only.

Why the fresh diagnostic mattered

This is the case for verifying before installing, even when a part is already sitting on the van. Trusting the prior “it’s the element” and fitting the pre-ordered part would have wasted the customer’s money and left the range dead. Testing the voltage path first found the true fault, saved a pointless install, and gave the homeowner a straight answer — repair the board if it existed, and since it doesn’t, replace the unit — instead of a bill for a fix that was never going to work.
