A homeowner in the Coopers community of Airdrie, AB contacted TechVill after the ice maker on their Samsung French-door refrigerator (model RF28JBEDBSG) stopped producing ice. They made one useful observation: the ice maker did not look frozen up. TechVill technician Hardeep confirmed that hunch through test-mode diagnostics — the failure was mechanical, inside the ice maker assembly itself.
The Problem and Diagnosis
A frozen-up ice maker — where ice bridges across the mould and jams the mechanism — is the most common failure mode on refrigerators like this mid-tier Samsung RF28-series unit. Ruling it out early changes where you look. Because the customer reported no visible freeze-up, the diagnostic focus moved straight to the mechanism: the drive motor, gearbox, and ejector arm.
Hardeep accessed the refrigerator’s ice maker test mode and found the drive motor stuck. Instead of rotating the ejector arm to push cubes into the storage bin, the motor was straining against a jammed mechanism and producing a continuous abnormal grinding noise. The binding was internal to the sealed assembly — not something clearing ice or cleaning could free.
Before concluding, he verified what wasn’t at fault: no external leaks, no wiring damage, no water supply issues, and a water inlet reading normal. With the plumbing, electrical, and feed systems all cleared, the fault was isolated to an internal failure of the ice maker assembly, which calls for a full assembly replacement rather than an in-place repair.
The Repair
The on-site diagnostic took 28 minutes. Repair scope was quoted and approved, and the part was prepaid.
Component ordered:
- Ice maker assembly (part #DA97-15217D) — the motorized module that forms, ejects, and drops ice cubes into the bin. This is a superseding Samsung part number: the original assembly for this model has been updated by Samsung, and ordering the current version avoids installing a discontinued part.
At the time of writing, this part is on backorder from Samsung with no fixed ETA. Rather than leave the customer guessing, Hardeep shared an honest estimate upfront — roughly two to three weeks. At the install visit, the new assembly goes in, motor rotation and ejector-arm operation are verified, an ice-production cycle is run, and the unit is checked for leaks and abnormal noise before the balance of labour is completed.
