An LG electric dryer (model DLEX4370K) in the Aspen Woods area of SW Calgary was showing a D80 error code and had stopped drying properly. On LG dryers, the code is a starting point for a diagnostic, not a verdict — so the value of the visit was in confirming what it actually pointed to before condemning a part.
How the diagnosis went:
- Read the code in context. LG uses the D80 code to flag a heating or airflow-restriction condition — the control has detected that heat output or exhaust flow is outside its expected range. On its own, that could mean a failed heating element, a restricted vent, or a thermal sensor reading abnormally, so the code narrows the field without closing it.
- Rule out airflow. A blocked vent or lint-choked path can drive the same code as a dead element, and swapping an element that was never the problem fixes nothing. With airflow confirmed clear, the fault had to be in the heat circuit itself.
- Test the heat circuit to the component. The heating element assembly — the resistive coil that warms the incoming air — had failed, consistent with the code and with the no-heat symptom. That is the correct endpoint for the D80 code once airflow is ruled out.
With the fault confirmed, Marlon replaced the element assembly and ran the dryer to verify heat output before closing the job. The whole visit — disassembly, element replacement, reassembly, and a heat test — ran about 90 minutes.
Component replaced:
- Heating element assembly (part #5301EL1001H) — the resistive coil, terminal, and housing that heat the air drawn through the drum; the failed assembly was the source of the D80 code and the no-heat symptom
The repair came to $568.05 CAD ($541 + 5% GST): parts $256, labour $255, and a $30 handling fee. A 90-day labour warranty covers the work.
Why reading the code correctly is the whole job
A dryer error code is a helpful pointer, but it describes a condition, not a cause. D80 says “heat or airflow is out of range” — it does not say which. The discipline that separates an accurate fix from a guess is confirming airflow is clear before deciding the element is dead, because both faults present identically to the customer as “not enough heat” and identically to the control as a D80. Confirming the actual cause on the first visit is what keeps this from becoming a returned part and a second trip.
