A homeowner in the Tuscany community of NW Calgary called TechVill about a Fisher & Paykel French-door refrigerator that had stopped making ice. The fault had a telling history: the ice maker once over-produced — running batch after batch without stopping — then went quiet. Water still filled the mould, but nothing came out. TechVill technician Hardeep traced it to an ice maker assembly that had failed internally.
The unit is a Fisher & Paykel RF201ADUSX5n counter-depth French-door refrigerator with a through-the-door dispenser. From the front everything looked normal — the failure was hidden inside the freezer drawer.
The Problem — Ice Maker That Over-Produced, Then Stalled
The homeowner reported ice building up continuously, then the mechanism no longer cycling, and no ice dropping into the bin. That points to a two-phase failure — first a control-side issue that kept production running without a proper stop signal, then a mechanical stall that froze the cycle mid-way.
Diagnosis — Stuck in the Harvest Cycle
Hardeep removed the ice maker cover in the freezer compartment. The mould had filled with water and frozen, but the harvest cycle — the stage where the ejector rotates to push cubes into the bin — never ran. The ejector would not turn, so the frozen batch stayed put and no new batch could begin.
A physical inspection cleared the plumbing and housing — no leaks, no cracks, no water damage. With water fill working normally and the harvest stage dead, the fault sits inside the assembly itself: the harvest motor, ejector, or control.
The rating plate at the base of the cabinet confirmed the exact model — Fisher & Paykel RF201ADUSX5n — which fixes the correct OEM ice maker assembly this fridge takes.
The Repair — Full Assembly Replacement
On this design there is no reliable component-level fix for a seized harvest mechanism: the motor, ejector, and control are packaged as one sealed unit. The correct scope is a full assembly swap.
Component replaced:
- Ice maker assembly (part #820833P) — the complete Fisher & Paykel ice maker unit, combining the water fill, freeze mould, harvest motor and ejector, and the control that sequences fill → freeze → harvest into a single serviceable part
Replacing the assembly as a whole addresses both phases of this failure at once — the earlier over-production and the current stall — rather than chasing individual parts on an assembly that is already degrading.
The Result — In Progress
This repair is in progress. Hardeep completed the diagnostic on site, confirmed the scope with the homeowner, and the OEM part is on order and prepaid. Installation is booked for the part’s arrival: the old assembly comes out, the new one goes in, and a full fill-freeze-harvest cycle is run to verify ice production before the job closes. The quoted total is $672 CAD — OEM part, handling, and install labour — and TechVill’s 90-day labour warranty applies once the installation is complete.
