What the customer reported
Two complaints on one Viking gas range in the west Calgary acreage corridor:
- one of the ovens was not heating;
- a couple of the cooktop burners were not working.
Presented together like that, they read as one fault with two symptoms — most people would reasonably assume a common cause somewhere upstream, on the ignition system or the control side.
What was fixed on the day
TechVill technicians Randy and Gagan attended together, since a gas range diagnostic across an oven and multiple burner positions is genuinely a two-person scope.
The oven side came down to ignition. Both oven igniters were replaced:
- Glow igniter — the resistive element that heats to incandescence and both lights the oven burner and, by the current it draws, tells the gas valve it is safe to open. When it weakens, current drops below the valve’s threshold and the burner never receives gas, no matter how hot the igniter looks.
- Spark igniter — the electrode that fires the spark for its burner.
With both installed, the oven fired and held. Tested and confirmed working.
What was not fixed, and why
The left burner still did not work.
At that point there were two ways to handle the visit. The oven — the larger complaint, the more expensive part of the job — was done. The burner could have been quietly folded into “we’ll see how it goes”, or attributed vaguely to the parts just fitted needing to settle in.
Randy and Gagan kept diagnosing instead, and found a genuinely separate cause: the spark module is faulty.
That is a different component doing a different job. The igniters already installed are the physical devices that produce heat and spark at the burner. The spark module is the electronics upstream of them — the unit that generates and distributes the high-voltage pulses to the electrodes and manages re-ignition. A dead module leaves a perfectly good electrode with nothing to fire.
So the customer’s original two complaints really were two faults. They were not one problem with two faces.
Why the difference matters to the invoice
Because the remaining fault is a separate component, it gets a separate quote rather than being absorbed into the completed work or hidden inside a vague top-up.
Additional part required:
- Re-ignition spark module (part #PA020047) — the Invensys 0+4 module that generates and distributes the spark pulses to the cooktop electrodes and manages re-ignition; $673 plus GST, lead time 5–6 days
That number is stated on its own so the homeowner can decide about it on its own. The oven works. The remaining decision is about one burner and one specific price, with no pressure created by bundling it into a total for work already done.
The work completed today
The completed repair — glow igniter, spark igniter, parts handling and two-technician labour — came to $1,355.55 including GST, with $594.30 prepaid against the parts and $761.25 paid on the day.
The general point
Mid-repair discoveries are the moment where a service call either earns trust or spends it. There are three ways to handle a symptom that survives the repair you just performed:
1. Say nothing and hope it is not noticed. 2. Blame the newly fitted parts and propose more of the same. 3. Diagnose it properly, name the actual component, and quote it separately.
The third takes longer on site and produces a smaller invoice on the day than the second. It is also the only one of the three that leaves the customer able to check the work.
