What the customer reported: the LG over-the-range microwave runs normally — lights, turntable, timer — but doesn’t heat food. And a telling detail: the fuse had already been replaced once, yet the problem persisted.
What that combination usually means: “runs but won’t heat” points at the high-voltage heating chain rather than the main controls. But when a fuse swap has already failed to fix it, the smart question changes from which single part died to what else is wrong — because microwaves that keep taking out fuses, or keep not heating past a new fuse, usually have more than one fault feeding the symptom.
What the diagnostic actually found: TechVill technician Albin’s inspection of the MVEM1721F turned up three separate contributing problems:
- Significant oil and residue buildup inside the unit — years of cooking splatter migrated into the works, interfering with components. Over a range top, this is an occupational hazard: the microwave lives directly in the vapour stream of every meal cooked below it.
- Several faulty internal switches — the door interlock chain no longer functioning as intended. These switches are the safety gate for the entire heating circuit: if they don’t prove the door closed, the microwave will run everything except the heat.
- A failed internal fuse — again. Consistent with the electrical stress the faulty switch chain puts on the circuit, and the reason the customer’s own fuse replacement couldn’t stick.
Why the fix is all three, together: replace only the fuse and the switch chain keeps stressing it; replace only the switches and the contamination keeps working on the components; clean without repairing and the electrical faults remain. The quoted remediation covers the set — switch holder assembly (part #3501W1A019S), internal fuses (20A ×2), and a thorough interior cleaning to remove the buildup.
The terms: the repair is quoted at $524 + tax ($550.20 with GST), the quote holds for 30 days, and the $169 service call is credited toward the repair if the customer proceeds within that window — TechVill’s standard structure, same in BC as in every province we operate.
The broader lesson for any “runs but won’t heat” microwave: a persistent symptom after a correct-looking part swap usually means the fault list is longer than one item.
