Fagor Commercial Dishwasher — One Cycle Working, Two Dead: Isolating a Control Fault, Downtown Calgary

A downtown Calgary business on Stephen Avenue had a Fagor COP-504W commercial undercounter dishwasher stuck on a single program. The short cycle (P1) ran fine. The other two program buttons, P2 and P3, did nothing — press them and the machine simply wouldn’t start the cycle. When one program works and others don’t, the fault is rarely mechanical, and confirming that before quoting parts is the whole job.

How the diagnosis ran

TechVill technician Oleksandr worked the machine from the water side inward, because the fastest way to rule a control fault in is to prove the mechanical side is healthy:

1. Confirmed the mechanics on the working cycle. Because P1 runs, the fill, wash, and drain hardware all physically function — the pump, valves, and plumbing are doing their jobs. A machine that can complete one full cycle isn’t failing on water or mechanics.
2. Isolated the fault to control logic. With the mechanical side proven, the fact that specific programs won’t initiate points at the electronics that select and sequence cycles — not at any single valve or pump. The main control board (the relay card that switches the machine’s functions) and the display/UI card that reads the button presses are the components that decide whether P2 and P3 ever start.
3. Flagged the contingency honestly. On a control-logic fault, replacing the boards is the correct path, but Oleksandr disclosed up front that a control-side repair can occasionally surface a further issue once the new boards are reading the machine — so the customer knew the scope before committing.

The repair scope

Components identified for replacement:

• Five-relay control card / main board (part #12008750) — the board that switches the machine’s core functions and sequences each program
• Display card / UI panel (part #12010417) — reads the program-button inputs and drives the interface

The main control board is on backorder with no confirmed ETA, so the repair is staged: parts prepaid and on order, with the install to follow once the board arrives. The quoted total for the parts and labour is $1,680 including GST.

Why this approach matters

The tempting move on a commercial machine “that only runs one cycle” is to start swapping pumps or valves — visible, expensive, and wrong here. Proving the mechanical side healthy on the working cycle, then isolating the dead programs to the control boards, means the customer pays for the parts that actually fix it rather than a round of trial-and-error. Disclosing the backorder and the contingency keeps a kitchen’s expectations straight while the board is sourced.
