What the customer reported
A homeowner in Coral Springs, the lake community in Calgary’s northeast, called TechVill about a Miele dishwasher with two symptoms: the drain indicator light was flashing, and the unit wouldn’t proceed into a cycle. On a Miele, that combination isn’t random misbehaviour — it’s the machine’s protective logic announcing that something in the water-handling chain has failed, and declining to run until it’s resolved. The flashing light says where to look; it doesn’t say which component.
What the diagnostic showed
TechVill technician Hardeep verified the cycle stage by stage rather than guessing at the most common culprit.
The drain pump ran normally at the start of the cycle — the unit was genuinely trying to begin. After the drain sequence, the control board sent proper voltage to the water inlet valve — so the electronics, timing and wiring were all doing their jobs. And then: no water entered the machine. A valve receiving a correct open command and passing nothing has failed internally. The control system was never the problem; the valve was.

That step-by-step verification matters because each stage cleared a suspect before the next was examined. The part being replaced is the part that was proven to fail — not the first thing on a generic “won’t fill” checklist.
The finding the customer got to decide on
While inside the water-handling components, Hardeep inspected the adjacent pressure switch — the sensor that monitors water level during fill — and found its seals visibly worn. Not failed yet; failing. The disclosure to the customer drew the line plainly: the inlet valve is necessary to fix today’s problem, and the pressure switch is recommended preventatively, since the machine is already being opened and the part is on its way out. The customer chose to do both — one parts order, one install visit, instead of a near-certain second service call when the switch finishes wearing out.
Components on order (customer prepaid):
- Water inlet valve (part #10359302, 2.5 L/min, 110–120V) – the electrically commanded valve that admits water at the start of each cycle; failed internally
- Pressure switch (part #6996821, 1100/700 mm WS) – monitors water level during fill; replaced preventatively due to worn seals
Parts are OEM Miele with a five-to-seven-day ETA; the install visit will fit both components and run a complete cycle to confirm fill, drain and cycle progression, with the drain light staying dark. Parts were prepaid at the diagnostic visit ($445 for the valve and $233 for the switch, plus GST), with install labour due at completion.
Why the difference matters
“Dishwasher won’t fill” invites two bad outcomes: a guessed valve swap that happens to be right but proves nothing, or a deferred sensor that fails three months later and costs a second trip. This visit avoided both — the failure was demonstrated, not assumed, and the aging component was disclosed honestly with the decision left where it belongs, with the homeowner.
