A squeaky dryer is more than just annoying — it’s usually a warning that a moving part is worn, dry, or misaligned. The most common sources are the dryer belt, idler pulley, and glide bearing (or drum rollers, depending on the model).

Below is a structured, step-by-step guide to help you identify the cause and fix it safely.

Identifying the Causes of Why Your Dryer Is Squeaking

Before you start, try to notice when the squeak happens:

  • Right when the drum starts turning: belt or idler pulley is a common culprit.
  • Constant squeak throughout the cycle: drum glides/bearings or rollers may be worn.
  • Squeak + burning smell: stop using the dryer — belt/pulley friction can overheat.

In most cases, squeaking is caused by one (or more) of these parts:

  • Dryer belt (worn, fraying, glazed, slipping)
  • Idler pulley (worn bearing, flat spot, excessive friction)
  • Glide bearing / drum glides (worn pads causing metal-on-metal friction)

Steps for Finding the Cause of a Squeaky Dryer

Important safety note: Always unplug the dryer (or switch off the breaker) before opening any panels.

1) Inspect the Dryer Belt

The belt drives the drum. Over time it can crack, fray, or stretch, causing squeaks or squeals.

  • Disconnect power.
  • Open the top (or front) panel depending on the model.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, fraying, shiny/glazed areas, or looseness.

If damaged: replace the belt — this is the correct fix (not lubrication).

2) Check the Idler Pulley

The idler pulley keeps proper belt tension. A worn pulley bearing often produces a sharp squeal.

  • Disconnect power and open the cabinet.
  • Locate the pulley near the motor.
  • Spin it by hand — it should rotate smoothly and quietly.

Signs it needs replacement: grinding, wobble, sticking, or a high-pitched squeal when spinning.

3) Examine the Glide Bearing (Front Drum Support)

Glide bearings (drum glides) support the front of the drum and prevent friction. When worn, they can squeak and scrape.

  • Remove the front panel (varies by model).
  • Inspect glide pads for wear, missing chunks, or discoloration.

If worn: replace the glides. Lubrication is usually temporary and can attract lint.

Fixing a Squeaky Dryer

Once you’ve identified the cause, apply the correct repair below.

Replacing the Dryer Belt

  1. Disconnect the dryer from power.
  2. Open the top/front panel and locate the belt path.
  3. Release belt tension by moving the idler arm/pulley.
  4. Remove the old belt from the drum and motor pulley.
  5. Install the new belt along the same routing.
  6. Reattach the idler to restore proper tension.
  7. Reassemble panels and test the dryer.

Adjusting (or Replacing) the Idler Pulley

  1. Disconnect power and access the motor/pulley area.
  2. Inspect pulley alignment and belt routing.
  3. If your model supports adjustment: set belt tension so it’s firm (not overly tight).
  4. If pulley is noisy/worn: replace it (best long-term solution).
  5. Reassemble and test.

Lubricating the Dryer (Only When Appropriate)

Lubrication can reduce noise short-term, but it’s not a substitute for replacing worn parts. If you choose to lubricate:

  • Unplug the dryer first.
  • Access the suspected squeak source (rollers/pulley/bearing).
  • Use a small amount of appliance-safe lubricant on the correct moving point.
  • Rotate the drum by hand to distribute.
  • Reassemble and test.

Do not over-lubricate: excess oil attracts lint and can create new problems.

Other Potential Causes of a Squeaky Dryer

Missing / Damaged Parts

Inspect the drum supports, belt path, pulley bracket, and glide bearings for cracks, missing pads, or misalignment. Replace the defective component.

Clogged Lint Trap (Maintenance Item)

A clogged lint system can strain the dryer and worsen noise over time.

  • Unplug the dryer.
  • Remove and wash the lint screen (warm soapy water), dry fully.
  • Vacuum the lint trap housing and check the vent for restriction.

Igniter Issues (Gas Dryers)

Igniter problems typically relate to heating, not squeaking. If you suspect ignition/heating issues, it’s safer to contact a technician.
