A Stittsville homeowner’s Samsung DVE53BB8700 electric dryer had locked itself out of service with a stubborn pair of symptoms: a “Close Door” error that blocked every cycle, and an interior light that never turned off. The customer’s own guess — “a possible sensor issue” — turned out to be exactly right. The door switch on a dryer is a position sensor: it tells the control board whether the door is physically closed. When the switch fails with its contacts stuck open, the electronics believe the door is open no matter what reality says — so cycles refuse to start, and the drum light, which is wired to door position, burns on around the clock.

With the switch registering door position correctly, the error cleared, the light went out with the door shut, and the dryer accepted cycle commands again. The repair came to $386 plus Ontario HST, $436.18 all in, approved by the customer at the quote stage before any work proceeded.
Two small notes worth keeping. First, a failed door switch mimics more expensive problems — a customer who assumes “control board” can be quoted hundreds of dollars more by a shop that doesn’t test the cheap component first. The symptom pair here (error plus stuck light) points squarely at the switch, and testing it takes minutes. Second, this repair used the OEM Samsung part rather than a generic equivalent: door switches carry the full motor-start current on every cycle, and an off-spec contact rating is how a five-dollar saving becomes a repeat failure.
